CITB-Test

Tips to Pass the CITB Test

A CITB test, or commonly known as the Health Safety and Environment test, is a fundamental exam that individuals must pass before they start working in the construction industry. The CITB test is a primary exam that is designed to communicate knowledge of maintaining Health and Safety on a construction site and is a vital preparation for construction workers to show that they can operate safely in the construction environment.

Besides improving your knowledge of Health and Safety on site, it is a mandatory requirement to pass this test if you are wanting to then get a CSCS card, providing you have achieved all other relevant qualifications.

The CITB test is made up of 50 questions covering five core knowledge areas:

  • Legal and management
  • Health and welfare
  • General safety
  • High risk activities
  • Environment

And there are three main types of CITB tests based on type of roles you want to pursue in construction:

  • Operatives
  • Specialists
  • Managers and Professionals

At Construction Helpline we take pride in providing our clients with the outmost support and assistance that will help maximise their chances in passing the CITB test and set them on a pathway for an exciting career in construction.

Our team has compiled the top 5 tips for passing the CITB test

  1. Plan and study – we cannot stress the importance of this enough. Map out a timely, step-by-step plan of how to tackle the basic concepts, scenarios and potential questions in the test. Once you have a general idea of what to expect, we would suggest formulating a strict schedule, with deadlines and daily objectives that you must meet in order to get prepared for the test.
  2. Ensure that you read each question carefully and concisely as some questions may be convoluted or asked to give multiple answers. The only way for you to get a full point is to select all the correct questions – there are no half points given, so make sure you attempt each one. Also, make sure that you are keeping track of the how much time is left in the exam as to avoid you giving frantic answers
  3. Besides books and videos, CHL has countless free online blogs and infographics for you to read and get yourself prepared with the exam. It is a good idea to get yourself familiarised with our content because a lot of the information in there will include the questions and answers for the exam.
  4. The most important preparation that you can do is to get a concrete understanding of what to expect in the test. A great way to sharpen your understanding of this is to complete online practice tests. There are plenty of free online practice tests, as well our own CHL one.
  5. Talk to someone that has completed the CITB or health and safety test before. If you don’t know anyone, you can search through forums online or call us on 0207 199 9800 and we will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have.

And lastly, revise, revise, revise – the CITB test is no walk in the park, make sure that you are well-prepared, have a plan-of-action ready and you are well rested before the exam.
